Eu insurance card (blue insurance card)

What is the eu insurance card?

The European Union Health Insurance Blue Card is a card that shows that you have the right to treatment under the same conditions as citizens of the country you are traveling to. When traveling to one of the countries of the European Union , Norway , Iceland , Liechtenstein or Switzerland , you must use the Blue Card of the European Union health insurance.

This card is free and valid for up to five years . If you need to use the card for something other than vacationing or living abroad, the credit may be shorter.  It is important that the EU Health Insurance Blue Card is valid for the entire stay abroad.

Neither the yellow nor the blue card will cover you when you travel to countries other than those listed above. If you want to be covered by health insurance when traveling to these countries, you must take out private travel insurance with your insurance company.

Who can get the EU health insurance blue card?

note: everyone who has a legal residence in Denmark can apply.

It has nothing to do  with having a red passport or citizenship

The EU health insurance card shows that you have the right to use the same health services under the same conditions as citizens of the country where you reside. So you may have to pay for all or part of the treatment yourself, if the same applies to hygiene. Insured citizens of the country, you may be at risk of paying for treatment yourself.

The EU health insurance blue card only covers if the doctor, dentist or hospital is connected to the public health insurance in the country.

What does the EU health insurance blue card not cover?

The EU Health Insurance Blue Card does not cover home transport costs and in some countries it does not cover all medical transport costs. If you want to cover all medical and domestic transportation expenses related to illness or death, you should take out private travel insurance. Special rules apply to domestic shipments from Finland, Iceland, Norway and Sweden.

If treatment is the only reason you are traveling to the country, the card does not cover planned treatment. Treatment that can reasonably wait until you return to Denmark is also not covered.
